FAQ

Everything you need to know about working with me

What are your productions like?

My sets are calm, well-organised, and collaborative. I create a space where everyone—crew, clients, and contributors—feels supported, respected, and clear on the goal. I believe in inspiring people to be their best, so they can go beyond what they thought was possible. That’s how we capture real, honest stories that reflect the heart of the organisations we’re representing.

What types of projects do you direct?

I specialise in directing commercial films that feature real people (non-actors) and authentic stories. My work often takes a cinematic, documentary-style approach—whether it’s for global brands, luxury products, or comedy-led campaigns.

What’s your filmmaking style?

My style blends cinematic visuals with a documentary sensibility. That means the imagery is polished and considered, but the performances feel honest, natural, and unscripted. I’m particularly known for helping everyday people feel comfortable on camera so their stories come through genuinely.

How do you work with real people or non-actors on set?

Working with real people is all about trust. I’m usually involved in casting and get to know contributors ahead of time. On set, I create a relaxed atmosphere so that what we capture feels like a conversation—not a performance. That’s where the honesty comes from.

Have you worked internationally?

Yes—I’ve filmed in over 50 countries, often in fast-moving or logistically complex environments. I’m experienced in adapting to local cultures and production styles, which is why brands trust me with international projects.

Who are some of your clients?

I’ve directed projects for a wide range of organisations including Tesco, Amazon, BASF, ExxonMobil, Avon, Diageo, and many others—across industries from automotive to education, lifestyle, and tech.

How can we hire you for a project?

You can contact me directly via ben@whenjusthappened.com. I work with agencies, in-house teams, or directly with brands—either independently or through a production partner, depending on what’s best for the project.

Can you also produce the project through your company, When Just Happened?

Yes—if you'd like to work with me directly, I can produce the project through my company, When Just Happened. I’ve delivered everything from TV and cinema campaigns to social-first films and branded online content.

Do you work with agencies, in-house teams, or directly with brands?

All of the above. I regularly work with agencies (including their in-house production teams), collaborate with third-party production companies, and take on direct-to-brand work—either under their structure or through my own.

How far in advance should we book you for a shoot?

Most projects are booked two to four months in advance. This helps with availability, but also gives the pre-production process the time it needs—which is critical to making the actual shoot run smoothly.

Can I book you directly, or do you work through a production company?

You can book me directly as a freelance director. In the UK, I’m non-exclusively represented by Scenester Films, Dark Energy Films, and The Chase Films. Depending on the project, I’m happy to work through a production partner or independently.
